or Umbrated: is said of any other charge, as well as of a cross, when it is represented in outline only; "and such bearing", says Gwillim, "is be better heralds than grammarians called transparent, because the field being on the other side, yet the colour and tincture thereof sheweth through the charge". It is, in fact, the shadow or umbra of a charge, and therefore called umbrated
